Medway bin collections
Medway still collects everything weekly, all on the same day. There's no rubbish bin: you buy your own black sacks and leave them at the edge of your property. And one brown garden bin is emptied for free, every week.
Which bin is which in Medway
Paper and card go in the blue reusable bag, and plastics and other dry recycling in the white bag, with clear sacks delivered every 13 weeks. Put everything out by 7am, but not before the night before.
Garden waste: £40 a year
One brown bin is collected weekly for free, or brown sacks if you have nowhere to keep a bin. The £40 subscription covers each additional brown bin for 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027, up to three extra per property, and the price doesn't drop if you start late. Permits arrive within 10 working days.
Weekly food waste collection
Weekly, in the 23 litre bin, or mixed in with garden waste in the brown wheelie bin. Free 5 litre silver kitchen caddies are available from libraries and community hubs, and flats have had a weekly food service since 6 April 2026.
Report a missed bin
Report no later than 4pm on the day after the missed collection.
Bulky waste collection from £30
Each household gets one free standard collection of up to three items, subject to availability. After that it's £30 on your usual bin day or £54 on a different day, three items per booking. You can book up to eight weeks ahead. Free slots go fast, so if you no longer need yours, cancel by 4pm the day before.

Worth knowing in Medway
Collections usually run as normal on bank holidays, apart from Christmas and New Year.
Get told the night before
Binformation is a free Android app. Put your postcode in once and it sends a notification the evening before each collection, saying which bins are going. If the council moves your day for a bank holiday, the reminder moves with it.
