East Devon bin collections
There's no summer-only option for East Devon's green bin. It's £65 for 12 months of fortnightly collections, even if you only wheel it out when the hedge needs doing. Recycling is split between a box and a sack, so it pays to know which takes what.
Which bin is which in East Devon
Paper, card, glass bottles and jars, batteries in a clear bag, small electricals and bagged clothes go in the box. Plastics, cartons, tins, foil and empty aerosols go in the sack, and cardboard and glass must stay out of it. Anything else goes in the black wheeled bin or gull sack.
Garden waste: £65 a year
£65 a year covers one bin, and you can have up to three per property at the same price each, all ending on the same date. It has to be a council-branded bin, because they're microchipped to the address. Bags beside the bin are left behind, and so is kitchen food, though windfall apples and pears are fine. A lost or stolen bin is replaced free; damage it yourself and it's £32.
Food waste collection
Cooked and raw food goes in the blue caddy, bones and tea bags included. Line it with newspaper, a carrier bag or a bread bag, but not compostable packaging. Need another caddy? Ring 01395 571515 and pick option 3.
Bulky waste collection from £60
The first item costs £60 and each one after that adds £15, up to ten items for £195. No concessions, no exceptions.
Worth knowing in East Devon
Put your containers at the edge of your property where it meets the road. If you use a gull sack, bag the rubbish first: the crews won't pick up anything left outside the black bin or sack. The tips are Devon County Council's, on 03451551010.
Get told the night before
Binformation is a free Android app. Put your postcode in once and it sends a notification the evening before each collection, saying which bins are going. If the council moves your day for a bank holiday, the reminder moves with it.
